Back Pain From Smart Phones

‘IPosture’ is being blamed for a worrying level of back pain among 18 to 24 year olds. A massive 84% of those in this age bracket are admitted to suffering some form of back pain in the last year by a recent survey. Although in general the majority of people experience back pain in the lower back the survey shows that the 18 to 24 year olds experience more pain in the upper back and neck.

It is probable that this is down to the constant slumping, hunching and looking down at hand held devices. Young people are spending more time than ever on hand held devices and at younger and younger ages due to popular social websites such as Facebook and Twitter, improvement in technology also means it is easier to access the internet. Alarmingly some children are now able to operate hand held devices before they are able to read and write.

Another reason for bad posture in young adults could be down to the lack of good old fashioned advice. Parents today are far less likely to tell children to sit up and stand up straight than in previous generations, this is also the case of teachers. Being aware you are slouching or hunching over your tablet or smart phone is half the battle, the other half is sitting up straight and trying to keep the device at a reasonable height (level with your eyes to avoid hunching would be the optimum position.

If you are suffering from back pain then you might want to try one of our Superest back cushions or a sitting wedge to help with posture, if you would like more advice we are happy to speak with you on the phone.
