We discuss human sleep a lot here at Putnam HQ and on our blog and social media feeds. So we thought we would share some interesting animal sleep facts to shake things up a little.
Dolphins and whales have the ability to sleep with only one half of their brain at a time. This prevents them from drowning in their sleep.
Sea otters will sometimes hold hands when they sleep so they don’t drift away from each other.
Migrating birds can sleep whilst flying. Some species of birds fly for 6 months straight, eating, drinking and sleeping whilst airborne.
Cows like to sleep close to their families, and sleeping arrangements are determined by individuals rank I the social hierarchy.
Humans sleep for an average of 8 hours a day, let’s see how that compares to some other animals:
Chimpanzee : 9.7 hours
Dog : 10.1 hours
Cat : 12.5 hours
Tiger : 15.8 hours
Little Brown Bat : 19.9 hours
Pig : 7.8 hours
Elephant : 3.5 hours
Horse : 2.9 hours
We aren't sure many of these animals have a Putnam Pillow in their bed/nest but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. Did you know, us humans spend a third of our lives in bed?! Don't you think it is time you invested in your sleep? Shop now:
