Sitting Wedges and Seat Wedge Cushions - Your Questions Answered

What is a Seat Wedge?

A seat wedge (also commonly called a sitting wedge or foam chair wedge) is a triangular shaped foam cushion which allows you to position your body into a more comfortable position while seated. Sitting wedges are a popular choice for those experiencing back pain to assist with better posture and alleviate discomfort.

Seat Wedges can come in many foam grades including standard foam and memory foam.

Why use a Seating Wedge?

A seat wedge naturally pushes the pelvis forward when sitting aiding better posture by encouraging your back into an upright position. A sitting wedge also aids core stability, eases back pain and provides a more comfortable working position, especially if you are seated for longer periods of time.

Ideal for:

  • Pelvic support and comfort
  • Lower back discomfort
  • Arthritis pain
  • Sciatica
  • Coccyx injury or bruising
  • Scoliosis
  • Osteoporosis

How to use a Seat Wedge?

Simply sit on it!

Place your seat wedge on any office chair, dining chair, car seat, wheelchair or any other type of seating.  Ensure that your seat wedge cushion is positioned with the incline sloping downwards towards the front of chair, to encourage you to sit more upright.

Which Seat Wedge Cushion is best?

Putnams sell 8 degree or 11 degree Seat Wedges to promote better posture.

The larger the angle the more you will be ‘actively sitting’ which means that you will be using more of your back muscles helping to strengthen your spine as you sit. A stronger back will over time help back pain.

Our 11 Degree Wedge is particularly popular in "bucket" car seats to help level them off and make getting in and out of the car easier.

Coccyx wedge cushions feature a special horseshoe shaped cut-out and are specifically designed for use with a bruised or damaged coccyx.

Memory Foam Seat Wedge Cushions are a popular choice if you prefer a softer more comfortable option with a slightly less supportive feel.

Here are just a handful of comments from our happy customers:

"I fell recently landing on my coccyx and sitting was extremely uncomfortable. The coccyx wedge brought massive relief both at home when sitting and in the car. Excellent product."

"My seat wedge fits really well on my car seat and is supportive yet comfortable at the same time"

"For anyone with lumbar or pelvic issues these are a must! Slant wedge cushions are recommended by physiotherapists. I have an 11 degree one on the sofa and 8 degree wedge in the car. They are very good quality and accurately priced"

"This wedge is excellent for tilting your pelvis to allow your back to arch naturally. Great for in the car or any chair. I got one years ago and it’s still just as firm as when I bought it."
